What Is CS-4 Cordyceps?

CS-4 is a cultivated strain associated with Cordyceps sinensis, developed to provide a consistent and scalable alternative to rare wild Cordyceps.

Unlike mushroom extracts such as Lion's Mane or Reishi, where the fruiting body forms the starting mushroom material, CS-4 is specifically a cultivated Cordyceps mycelial product. This distinction is part of what makes CS-4 different, and we'll explain it in greater detail below.

Cordyceps is one of the most unusual groups of fungi in the natural world, with a long history of use in traditional East Asian herbal practices.

Traditional wild Cordyceps and cultivated CS-4 are closely connected in history, but they are produced in very different ways.

Wild Ophiocordyceps sinensis has a natural lifecycle involving insect larvae and is harvested from high-altitude environments. CS-4 Cordyceps is cultivated through liquid fermentation, allowing Cordyceps mycelium to be produced without wild harvesting or insect material.

HOW OUR 10:1 CORDYCEPS EXTRACT IS MADE

Our Cordyceps begins with CS-4 Cordyceps mycelium cultivated through liquid fermentation under controlled conditions, without the insect material associated with wild Cordyceps.

The cultivated Cordyceps material is then used to produce our concentrated extract. A 10:1 extract ratio describes the relationship between the amount of starting material used and the resulting extract — approximately 10 parts of starting Cordyceps material to 1 part finished extract under the manufacturer's extraction specification.

The finished powder is specified at a minimum of 40% total polysaccharides, giving us a clearly defined Organic Cordyceps extract that's convenient to measure and mix.
